A Dacia taxi with 500000 km on the clock

In the blog's content numerous high millage heroes were mentioned in the past, such as Mercedes Benz W124, Toyota Avensis, Toyota Land Cruiser, Volkswagen Passat or Mercedes Benz W115 for example just to mention a few, which managed to reach a commendable amount of kilometers without the need of an engine rebuild but they had something in common, they were a product of a car company of great reputation. Today, I'm going to break this tradition because I bringed you nothing less than the world's most affordable SUV, coming from a Romanian brand called Dacia!

Why am I so excited about this half a million kilometer distance traveled, first generation Dacia Duster 1.5 dCi which is serving as a taxi? First of all because it's coming from a very looked down brand with no prestige which is also having a not so great reputation in East Europe due to the fact that most people are still associating modern day Dacia-s with the ones produced in the soviet era, which lets be hones weren't to easy to live with at all. Poor build quality, reliability issues and the lack of any refinement or luxury was their most noticeable characteristic because the in question company founded in 1966 started its career with producing Renault licensed vehicles such as the Dacia 1100 and Dacia 1300 - based on the Renault 8 and 12 - without any experience which could be observed in their half ready feeling vehicles, meaning that reshaping the image of the brand and convincing those people who were familiar with the communist era's Dacia-s was no easy task. Despite these difficulties which mostly were carried over from the past Renault, which bought the mentioned company in 1999, managed to succeeded in it, now selling its cheaper alternative nearly world wide indicating that the days of those under engineered, 1.3 L OHV engine powered dinosaurs are over. The second reason which I think this high millage Dacia Duster is outstanding is that it's coming with the 1.5 dCi engine which is very controversial turbo diesel due to the fact that it had numerous generations since 2001 when it debuted; the earlier versions weren't that reliable compared to the since EURO5 emission norm featuring Bosch fuel injection equipped ones just because before Delphi and Continental - ex Siemens - was supplying Renault with a fuel injection system which had a high fail rate, unlike its successor, earning the 1.5 dCi a bad reputation. The other issue was that Renault extended the oil change periods to 30000 km from 150000 km - the reason is still unknown - and if in any 1.5 dCi this long and unrational period was applied than the bearings of the crankshaft tightened usually somewhere around 150000 km and the connecting rod broke the engine block, a phenomena which slightly decreased the sale figures. The overall verdict is that if you're buying an EURO5/6/6d 1.5 dCi engine powered vehicle which can be distinguished from the other versions by their 75, 90 and 110 HP power output in the easiest way which it had its oil changed every 150000 km at least than this tiny and highly economical French power plant can operate forever.

The example which I bought you in this case, this first generation Duster facelift 1.5 dCi to be more precise, is not only supporting my claims but it's highlighting that even the most affordable vehicles can be reliable and long lasting despite the stereotypes and negative opinions sticked to them if they're maintained properly and you don't necessarily have to own a German or a Japanese car to reach the half a million kilometer border. The in question SUV is less conventional compared to the other high millage heroes which were mentioned in the blogs content just because I know this car personally. It was sold by a friend of mine who's working in a Renault dealership and he sold this now 500000 km SUV somewhere around 140000 km to a taxi company which is still using it to this day. I couldn't keep my self for not asking how it's maintained and the answer was simple, changing the oil every 10000 to 12000 km and that's all. The internals and gearbox of this Duster are still the original while it's not showing signs of fading or no longer wanting to operating.
