The million mile Civic

The million mile - or 1.6 million km for us Europeans - club is dominated by old Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen diesels along with a bunch of Toyotas and just because of this reason I'm glad when I'm bumping into something else, outside these circles. Last time a Nissan Frontier a.k.a. Navara was mentioned in the blog's content which reached the seven digit millage while this time I brought you a 2006 Honda Civic.

The fact that Honda's are reliable isn't something new or surprising because the in question Japanese car manufacturer proved that their "schizophrenic" VTEC engines, which are the pioneers of variable valve timing and lift technology, are not only able to ensure an economical operation at low rpm but to also offer a serious performance "kick" at higher engine speeds, a feature which wasn't seen before 1989 when Honda introduced their first dual overhead cam VTEC engine - the B16A in the Integra XSi -, especially in case of naturally aspirated powerplants which before the VTEC era were either fuel efficient or performance oriented but never both at once. This wizardry can be thanked to a second cam profile which is letting more Oxigen in the combustion chamber, offering a slight drastic performance increase, after the mentioned second cam is actuated when the rpm reaches a certain point - 4500 in case of the 2.0 L K20 for example - and than that boom happens which so many people are loving. Achieving a high horsepower per liter rate isn't the only mentionable improvement due to the fact that these well engineered VTEC units turned out to be extremely reliable overtime. I personally know Honda Civics from the 90s with nearly half a million kilometers but to be more authentic and to be able to offer a more credible content I prefer to bring you such seven digit high millage heroes which are having a solid background, leaving no space for speculation.

The in question million mile 2006 Honda Civic was showed to the public by HondaPro Jason who is a popular brand representative and social media personality, who posted about this FA generation Civic sedan. The most outstanding information about this vehicle is that its engine and transmission are still the original, a fact underlined by Mathews Honda from Marion, Ohio where the in question Honda was and still is maintained and from where it's also deriving from. It's having a full service history while it's still belonging to its original owner who didn't refused to use his beloved vehicle. When the reliability issues were asked the crew said:

"At around 500000 miles (804672 km) it ended up needing a new head gasket. Obviously, he’s been through numerous sets of tires, numerous sets of front and rear brakes, multiple routine services that include tune-ups like spark plug changes and valve adjustments. Nothing out of the ordinary or major other than the head gasket. There was one instance where the engine’s computer went bad, but we replaced it and it was good to go."

“It’s proof that if you take care of your car, it’ll take care of you," he said. "The owner comes in for an oil change about every three to four months and he follows his car’s Maintenance Minder system, which tells him when to service the vehicle.

The fact that a non commercial vehicle can hold up for so long and with so few problems isn't a common phenomena, especially nowadays when those modern engines which are a victim of downsizing - seen in the European market - are usually falling apart at ten time less compared to the distance traveled by the million mile Civic. Another interesting thing is that the mentioned Civic isn't a prestige inspired car just like the famous million mile Lexus LS400, Mercedes Benz W124, etc. which were premium products when they were new so witnessing that a mass produced, affordable sedan can be as bulletproof overtime is its much more expensive alternatives is commendable.
